google chrome is the best browser on a netbook[8.15.09]
Those who know me in tech circles are going to find this a bit of a shock, because I have said before that I don't care for the Google Chrome web browser all that much. My attitude has changed however since getting my Dell Inspiron mini 10v. It turns out that Chrome is in fact the best browser for a netbook. This is for two primary reasons:
The second part is the most important. Here's an example:
The above is all you get. On my screen that's 1024x576. On others, 1024x600. Either is really small on the vertical. Both Firefox and IE take up too much vertical space. You encounter this the moment you open up more than one tab. Granted, you can F11 it to go full screen on either, but it's better when you actually see your tabs and address bar. Chrome is the best in this respect, so yeah, it's my primary browser on my netbook. I never thought I'd ever use this as the default, but it does the job better than all the rest. Who'da thunk it? 3 comments

Firefox 3.5

Personal Menu
Compact Classic Theme
Compact Classic Options
Fission (Integrates progress and URL goto links in awesome bar)
Remove bookmarks toolbar & status bar
Select small font size for address bar under customize (right click)
Tab Mix Plus for tab options (optional)
This setup uses WAY less vertical screen space than chrome, and gives you session management and a whole slew of other options. If you want, you can even install Tab Groups Manager allowing you to uncrowd your tab bar by seperating tabs into different groups of your choosing.
Thanks Jandry. Like the OP I am a diehard firefox user and was getting annoyed by having to hit f-11 and/or auto-hide my taskbar. I really did not want to have to switch browsers, and your add-on suggestions have done the trick and then some!
I am going to still use auto-hide taskbar for even more space, but your suggestions have REALLY helped and I def. wont have to keep tabbing in and out of f-11 anymore
