diagnostics/maintenance mode on nuvi 250 and other crapola

September 12, 2008

Yesterday (which was about 15 minutes ago being it just passed midnight as I write this) I picked up sis from TPA and delivered her to Pop’s. She’ll be there until Tuesday where I have to pick her up again and deliver her back to TPA so she can fly home.

She is well just in case you’re wondering (as is Pop). :-)

I asked her to bring along her nuvi 250 so I could update it. After bringing it home I ran the updater and yeah, it needed it.

In addition I found out that in order to get into the diag mode you have to press and hold the on-screen battery indicator for about 7 seconds and not the exact top right (which is the case on the c580).

There’s a little trick to plug in the unit via USB and have it not go into standby mode.

  1. Boot unit.
  2. Go into diag mode.
  3. Plug in USB cable.
  4. Exit diag mode.

Unit will reboot into normal mode and not standby at this point.

Why do I bother with diag mode? The answer is so that you can work with the unit while connected via USB when you upload point-of-interest stuff. Otherwise you send the POI stuff, unplug USB, reboot unit, blah blah blah. Wax on, wax off. Pain in the ass.

When doing the diag mode/reboot trick you don’t have to do any of that. Speeds things up a bit when you’re trying to get things done.
