pace cars, festival cars, trucks.. and station wagons?

The photo above reveals all details about the cars and trucks used at the 1975 Indianapolis 500 race. Fellow pace car owner Scott sent this my way.

All cars you see are Buicks, all trucks GMC. But there’s a few details here in this photo not seen in others.

First, this is the only photo I’ve ever seen of both pace car Centurys and festival car LeSabres convertibles together. Both in full signage.

Second, the GMC trucks used on the track were four-door crew cab models in plain red with white wheels and a large squared-off bar aft the cab. This is different from the special edition 1975 Indy Hauler truck.

Third, and most interesting, there are two station wagons in the field. Scott pointed this one out (and to be honest I would have missed it). They are at the very back of the pack and appear to be wood-paneled Buick Estate Wagons.

So.. if you wanted a piece of the 1975 Indy 500 pie, you’ve got a total of four vehicles to choose from. The ’75 Century, the ’75 LeSabre convertible, the ’75 GMC crew cab and.. the ’75 Estate Wagon.

One wonders if the wagon had any Indy 500 graphics on it or not?

Hi, you dont happen to have any pictures of the official promo gmc truck do you? I have a 1975 gmc that matches the pace car that my great grandfather picked up from the race when he was doing promotions i think he got if from one of the chief mechanics. it has a #27 on the mirror that was put on at the race. any info would be appreciated thank you, Dave

That first photo looks like one out of my book. I tryed to count converibles and think I got 36 and that is assuming that they was all there for the photo.
