Read my book: Don't Run A Web Site

an explanation for gaps in the post archives

I registered this domain in the very-late 1990s and have been running it as a blog since 2004. Just looking at 2004 to present, oh my God has the internet changed in that span of time.

Some of you out there (maybe you!) might go through my post archives, then wonder if there used to be more here.

Yes. I had to remove a bunch of stuff.

Did I have to remove stuff because it was... scandalous? No. Nothing scandalous nor particularly embarrassing.

What happened is much more pedestrian than that.

• Product photo images becoming not-okay to use.

Product photo images were a-okay to use as long as image credit was given. This changed to becoming not-okay to where "express written consent" was now required before image use. As such, those images were removed, and if a post with those accompanying images didn't hold any weight without them, it was also removed.

• Links to other articles going dead.

Links went dead either from the linked site going down (sometimes with the domain being registered by someone else and then redirecting to an adult site), the linked site changing their URL structure, or whatever.

• Personal to business back to personal.

I detail a bunch of this in my book Don't Run A Web Site, but the short version is that this site started as all-personal, then became all-business complete with annoying banner ads everywhere, then back to all-personal with all banner ads removed.

There were other reasons, but you get the general idea.

DONE A "when I get to it" project I have is to bring back as much of the old stuff as I can, but there's no way to do it quick. Whatever I bring back has to be done on a post-by-post basis. Anything formerly with a product image that's no longer here has to be edited. Anything with a dead link has to be edited. Much to do.

Eventually, at some point, I'll finish all the edits I need to, put back as much of the old stuff as possible, and then I can finally say yes, it's DONE.

Even if most if not all of what I bring back will be boring ass shit, that doesn't matter because it's just something I need to do. Again, eventually.
