So I released some free Garmin compatible maps
Even though Garmin did release a "2025" map, I went ahead and released some free maps of my own along with a book on how to install them. The maps are, of course, OpenStreetMap based.
Why did I do this even though Garmin is still currently updating maps? It's specifically for the "non-LM" models, as in the many thousands (millions?) of Garmin GPSes out there that were never released with a lifetime maps option. Some examples of that are the nuvi 1490T, 3790, 30, 40, 42, 44 and so on.
The main reason people stopped using Garmin GPSes is because the maps became outdated. The second reason is that the device doesn't have enough storage to fit new maps (easily fixed by installing a cheap 32GB microSD card). The third reason is that newer cars don't come with a 12V port (easily fixed by using this cheap USB power-only cable).
The fourth reason is only one that takes a little bit of effort, and that's looking up locations. OpenStreetMap doesn't do that very well for the United States. However, you can look up any location in a browser on the phone using Google Maps and get the GPS coordinates from there. Once you have the coordinates, you input that into the Garmin, optionally save that as a favorite and off you go.
My OSM map release is experimental and I've no idea how many people will use it. I have used it and yeah, it works and keeps those old Garmins going.
